Although genetics definitely do play a part, most healthcare is self-care.
Health isn’t something that happens only when we fall sick and end up in the doctor’s office. It isn’t something we should pay attention to only when we’re sick. It isn’t something that we should think about only in our twilight years.
Health is a choice that we make every moment of every day.
Should I get up and go for a walk or should I check my social media?
Should I have a cup of herbal tea to self-soothe or should I have the sugary candy bar?
When I wake up in the morning, should I drink warm lemon water or should I check my phone?
It is absolutely true that it is difficult to always stick to our ideal health routine. And it’s certainly true that it’s much harder to follow our health routine when we’re stressed or going through a difficult time.
A new study published in the journal, Obesity, has found that the pandemic and resulting lockdowns have caused:
- Increased consumption of junk food
- Reduced physical activity
- Reduced sleep
- Increased anxiety
These four lifestyle choices are just that – lifestyle choices. They are within our control. If we don’t make healthy choices, we will be making the outcome of COVID-19 worse for ourselves.
Given that the pandemic (unfortunately) isn’t going away tomorrow, what are ways in which you can maintain your healthy habits or establish new ones?
The trick is establishing a strong motive that will result in behavioral change and eventually become a habit. For some of you, this is something that you’ve been successful doing on your own. For others of you, getting outside help is critical to prioritizing yourself and establishing life-long healthy habits. This is where I come in.
I’ll help you stop your unhealthy habits and create healthy habits. I’ll also help you to lengthen your health span and not just your life span. Who wants to live to be 100 but spend their last 30 years in a wheelchair, with a chronic disease, on medications, or bedridden?
If your health habits have slipped during the pandemic, and you’d like some support, set up a 20-min complimentary call to find out how we can work together.
One positive that has come out of COVID-19 is that it has increased our awareness of the importance of diet, lifestyle, and behavior change and empowered us to exercise agency over the things that we can control.
